This post is about basic tips on how to setup wifi card / connection / encryption … on Ubuntu (12.04.2 LTS).

WiFi card setup

First install interresting tool hwinfo:

sudo su
apt-get install hwinfo

Here are some commands to detect card in the system / debug:

dmesg |grep "ath5.*chip"
ifconfig -a
hwinfo --netcard

To be able to connect to WPA secured WiFi network, it is neccessary to generate WPA passphrase. This command will generate psk encrypted passphare bound with ssid, this psk have to be pasted into /etc/network/interfaces:

apt-get install wpasupplicant -y
wpa_passphrase <ssid> <passwd>

To enable wifi connectivity permanently edit /etc/network/interfaces and add following, while disabling eth0 (preferably):
apt-get install vim
vi /etc/network/interfaces

# auto eth0
# iface eth0 inet dhcp

# Connection to <SSID>:
auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wpa-driver wext
wpa-ssid <SSID>
wpa-psk <generated psk>
# if your SSID is hidden, change value to 2
wpa-ap-scan 1
# type WPA for WPA1, RSN for WPA2
wpa-proto RSN
# type CCMP for AES, TKIP for TKIP
wpa-pairwise TKIP
# type CCMP for AES, TKIP for TKIP
wpa-group TKIP
# type WPA-PSK for shared key (most common), WPA-EAP for enterprise radius server
wpa-key-mgmt WPA-PSK
